Hinrich Foundation Research Fellow Stephen Olson addressed the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce (HKGCC) on February 23, 2017. Olson offered insights on the potential impact of U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies on U.S. trade relations to a room filled with HKGCC members and guests.
The HKGCC event titled “The Trump Administration: What Can We Expect?” focused on how actions taken by the Trump administration may impact global trade and investment. Speakers also discussed the potential repercussions for businesses in Hong Kong and Mainland China.
Olson began his presentation by examining what level of authority the U.S. president has when it comes to trade policy. He then offered background information and perspectives on the key members of Trump’s trade team. Olson concluded the presentation by posing likely scenarios for U.S. trade policy moving forward.
Olson advised participants to “keep their seatbelts fastened” as trade policy under the Trump administration could become turbulent.
In addition to Olson, Dr. Glenn Shive, Executive Director of the Hong Kong-America Center, was a panelist at the event. Shive shared his thoughts and insights on various political aspects of the Trump presidency.
