From human rights to climate change policy, trade agreements are now used "to advance a whole bunch of stuff that has nothing to do with trade," said Stephen Olson, Senior Research Fellow at the Hinrich Foundation.

Watch the webinar:

Decades-old norms in the global trading system are increasingly being led by geopolitical and state agenda. “Trade is no longer just about trade,” said Stephen Olson, Senior Research Fellow at the Hinrich Foundation and former US trade negotiator. In a wide-ranging keynote address, he reviewed US-China trade relations and what’s on the horizon for the world’s two largest economies. Olson laid out the pros and cons of trade policies including the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF). His take: the US may have to demonstrate its willingness to re-engage Asia on market access rather than double down on a values-oriented trade policy.

About the NPF International Trade Fellowship 2023

The National Press Foundation holds an annual International Trade Fellowship workshop for journalists sponsored by the Hinrich Foundation. This year, we welcomed 24 Asia-based journalists to the fellowship at the Hinrich Foundation offices in Singapore. The sessions, held in July, focused on US-China geopolitics, AI’s impact on trade, global shifts in supply chains, data visuals, and more.
