Hinrich Foundation launches new book on the impacts of FDI

Scott Miller, Senior Adviser and Scholl Chair in International Business at CSIS, opened the event by welcoming Merle A. Hinrich, the founder of the Hinrich Foundation, to introduce the book. Hinrich emphasized his hope that the book will encourage investors and host countries to create mutually beneficial partnerships for leveraging the impact of FDI.

“It is the Hinrich Foundation’s hope that other countries and other corporations will be able to maximize the benefits of foreign direct investment to further alleviate poverty, create stronger global economic partnerships and to enhance sustainable global trade,” Hinrich said.

Professor Michael J. Enright then presented the results of his groundbreaking research to a room filled with interested parties across government, business and academia. Using a unique economic impact analysis, Enright quantifies – for the first time – the remarkable impact of foreign direct by foreign invested enterprises (FIEs) on China’s economic development.

Following Enright’s presentation, an expert panel was assembled to discuss the book and address pivotal issues facing foreign investment in China today. The panel included:

• Scott Kennedy- Deputy Director, Freeman Chair in China Studies and Director, Project on Chinese Business and Political Economy, CSIS
• Erin Ennis, Senior Vice President, The U.S.-China Business Council
